Top tips to look fresh this summer!

Summer is setting in, which is evident with the late sun sets and rising temperatures. As exciting as this may be, maintaining the perfect Summer skin care regime may seem daunting.

As your skin starts to get more sun (which is great for all those selfies you will be taking), your skins molecular functioning will change drastically too. Evolve Day Spa shares some tips on how to take care of your skin by following the best skin regime for the hot, sunny months ahead.

Face care

During the hot, Summer months your skin may experience more oil than what it would in the cooler Winter months. You may find that you perspire more than usual, which is why it is important to cleanse your face twice a day. According to experts, the best way to keep your skin matte, yet moisturised is to cleanse twice daily with a foaming or gel-based face wash. First thing in the morning, to wash away the oil and perspiration that accumulates overnight, and then before bed, after thoroughly removing your makeup.

 Exfoliate regularly

Regular exfoliation enhances the removal of dry or dead skin cells that build up on the surface of the skin and is therefore one of the most important aspects of maintaining a healthy skin care routine. Exfoliation not only helps increase blood circulation in the face and body, but also helps to achieve a healthy glowing skin. Evolve Day Spa recommends visiting one of their branches to receive one of their fantastic exfoliation treatments such as the ZO Exfoliation Polish, valued at R1490.00. Some of the great benefits include; Magnesium crystals which provides impressive exfoliation benefits, the treatment instantly polishes skin to restore smoother texture and healthy glow and removes dead skin cells to prevent clogged pores.

Importance of SPF

Not only can UV rays accelerate skin ageing factors such as fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin but is harmful to your skin at any time of the year, even more so in the Summer months when our exposure levels are higher. Evolve Day Spa suggests incorporating your sun block cream as part of your daily ritual. A minimum of SPF 30 should be used daily and on days where you spend most days in the sun, a SPF 50 should be used, and constant re-application is a MUST. Evolve Day Spa recommends Lamelle’s Helase (retail cost R500.00) SPF 50.

Drink lots of water

It is important to drink 6 – 8 glasses of water a day to avoid dehydration. Not only is it necessary for your overall health but it also plays a vital role for your digestion and circulation as well as maintaining your skin’s health and beauty.

Summer Nail Trends You’ll Want To Try Now SS2019

While others keep a close watch on models’ clothing and shoes when strutting down the catwalk at the SS19 runway shows, we had our eyes glued to their nails. Here are some of the hottest nail trends for summer… which one is your favourite?

Sunshine yellow at Natasha Zinko

Bright and sunny yellow shades remain a summer favourite, so we were thrilled to see models at Natasha Zinko’s shows sporting this hot hue. Simply grab your favouite buttercup shade, paint on two coats, and follow with a topcoat to make sure your mani goes the distance. You’ll be turning heads for sure!

Pretty in pink at Kate Spade

Pastel pink shades are nothing new during Spring and Summer, but nail artists backstage at Kate Spade added a little edge by adding black flecks to a pale pink polish. An easy (and less messy) way to get this look is to keep an eye out for a clear polish with black flecks, and to apply this over the top of your pink polish.

Kith’s update on the traditional French mani

French manicures are so last century, but Kith has found a way to bring it back – BIG time. Grab two of your favourite shades (they’ve gone for cherry red and navy, but we like orange paired with a bright pink for that full on summer feeling), then paint them – one after the other – on to your nail tips.

PRO TIP: Allow the first shade to dry thoroughly before painting on you second shade. Finish off with a top coat for staying power.

Sweet simplicity at Monse

Oh, how we love this chic take on the feature nail trend! Take your lead from nail artists backstage at Monse by keeping your nails completely bare, except for one feature nail on each hand. Use some tape to create a diagonal strip, then use a white nail polish (or shade of your choice) to fill in the nail. Finish off with a top coat and wait for the compliments to come in!

Bubblegum delight at Natasha Zinko

We simply couldn’t get enough of the summery nail looks at Natasha Zinko (hence why we’ve included two nail looks from the Natasha Zinko SS19 show on this list). A perennial summer staple, bubblegum pink is a must for every woman’s nail kit. Keep nails short for a modern take on this look.

All that glitters at Tadashi Shoji

Take your cue from the dazzling ocean and go for a beautiful navy hue topped with a blue glitter polish. We think this look would work equally well on beach (or beside the pool) and whilst sipping on some bubbly at you office party. So simple, PLUS the glitter polish is less likely to chip (and is great for disguising smudges). It’s an impatient polisher’s dream!

Peachy Keen at Temperley London

We love peach and apricot shades for the warm summer months – especially when paired with tanned skin (from a bottle or professional spray tan, of course!) What we love even more it the unfinished look at Temperley London – models’ nails looked slightly smudged and scuffed, as though they’d spent too much time in the pool. We wouldn’t usually be onboard with an imperfect mani, but we think this undone look is just perfect for Summer!

So, we’d love to know: which of the above manis are your favourite, and which Summer nail trend are you most likely to try? Leave a comment below telling us which one you love most, and don’t forget to tag us in your at-home manicure looks over on Instagram

SUMMER BEAUTY TRENDS | A beautifully bronzed makeup look

The whole country might be in for a chilly snap this week, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t start to get excited about the upcoming summer months.

We don’t know about you, but the Beauty Warriors team is itching for summer to kick in… so much so that we’ve already dug out our favourite bronze and golden shadows, and we’ve just stocked up on some beautifully bright nail colours to get us in the mood! That’s why we couldn’t resist sharing MUD’s beautifully bronzed Summer Look for 2018 with our fellow beauty addicts.

You can use products you already have in your kit, or write down our suggestions in the post and head to your nearest MUD store to stock up. There’s never a better time to stock up on new makeup than a new season, right?

STEP ONE: Begin by applying a light layer of foundation to freshly cleansed and moisturised skin. Add concealer and powder where needed, but don’t go overboard. Dewy skin is all the rage this summer!

STEP TWO: Sweep a warm bronzer just under your cheekbones and around the perimeter of your forehead to warm up your face. We recommend MUD Sunshine Bronzer (R550).

STEP THREE: Use an eyeshadow brush (we recommend MUD’s Brush #610) to apply the same bronzer in the crease of your eye and along your lower lash line to create a smooth transition.

STEP FOUR: For added depth, blend a warm brown eyeshadow like MUD Brownstone Eye Color (R339) into the crease.

STEP FIVE: Apply a shimmery bronze eyeshadow to the center of your eyelid. We like applying MUD Bronzed Eye Color (R339) with MUD’s Brush #350. Use the same brush to apply a shimmery peach shadow to the inner corner of your eyelid – MUD Pixie Eye Color (R339) is ideal.

STEP SIX: Using a deep brown eyeliner or eyeshadow, liner your upper and lower lash lines, then finish off your eyes with a generous coat of MUD Volumizing Mascara. (Don’t forget those brows! Use MUD Eyebrow Cream and MUD Brush #220 to fill your brows as and where needed).

STEP SEVEN: Apply a nude or peach-hued lipstick to your lips, and top it off with a gloss to add shine. We like MUD Just Peachy Lipstick (R345) and MUD Bare Glaze (R270).

And that’s it! A really simple look that can be done in 10 minutes flat, but hits all the right notes this Summer. Will you be giving this makeup look a go? Let us know in the comments below, and don’t forget to tag us in your pics on social media!

Beauty Review: DermaFix Hand ResQ

[et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ next_background_color=”#2ea3f2″][et_pb_row][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” fullwidth=”on” specialty=”off” background_color=”#2ea3f2″ inner_shadow=”on” parallax=”off” prev_background_color=”#ffffff” next_background_color=”#ffffff”][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” fullwidth=”off” specialty=”on” prev_background_color=”#2ea3f2″][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ specialty_columns=”3″][et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_column_inner type=”4_4″ saved_specialty_column_type=”3_4″][et_pb_text use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” _builder_version=”3.12.2″]

When was the last time you showed your hands some love? We tend to overlook our hands when it comes to skincare, but our hands are just as exposed to the elements as our faces – it’s no wonder that they’re often one of the first parts of the body to show signs of ageing

You may spend thousands of Rands on anti-ageing serums and moisturisers for your face, but the dark spots, lines, and wrinkles on your hands are what truly reveal the number of candles on your birthday cake. Not to mention the fact that the cold, wintery weather can leave your hands feeling cracked, dry, and sapped of moisture. That’s why we believe that now is the perfect time to invest in a quality hand cream… and to apply it religiously after every hand wash. New DermaFix Hand ResQ (R270) is one of our most recent beauty discoveries – and one we can’t be without!

DERMAFIX HAND RESQ (R270)

The skin on your hands is much thinner than the skin on the rest of your body (and there are also fewer sebaceous glands), which is why your hands tend to be drier and loose suppleness faster than other parts of your body. Prevent moisture loss and improve your skin’s elasticity by arming yourself with a generous dollop of new DermaFix Hand ResQ. It provides unmatched moisture for dry, cracked skin, leaving your hands feeling instantly softer and smoother. It also improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles with regular use over time.

KEY INGREDIENTS:

  • Shea Butter: provides anti-inflammatory and skin smoothing benefits.
  • Hydrolyzed Keratin: replenishes skin moisture levels whilst improving skin elasticity.
  • Soluble Collagen: offers water binding capabilities whilst combatting fine lines and wrinkles, improving the texture and appearance of the skin.
  • Vitamin E: preserves the skins moisture, improving dry, rough and damaged skin. It furthermore increases enzyme activity, promoting wound healing benefits and the prevention of premature ageing.

TO USE:

Apply Hand ResQ on clean, dry hands several times a day, or as needed.

The truth about beauty oils

[et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ next_background_color=”#2ea3f2″][et_pb_row][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” fullwidth=”on” specialty=”off” background_color=”#2ea3f2″ inner_shadow=”on” parallax=”off” prev_background_color=”#ffffff” next_background_color=”#ffffff”][/et_pb_section][et_pb_section bb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section” fullwidth=”off” specialty=”on” prev_background_color=”#2ea3f2″][et_pb_column type=”3_4″ specialty_columns=”3″][et_pb_row_inner][et_pb_column_inner type=”4_4″ saved_specialty_column_type=”3_4″][et_pb_text use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid” _builder_version=”3.12.2″]

What if we told you that your perception of oils – that they make your skin greasy and may result breakouts – has been wrong all along? Read on to discover the true magic of beauty oils, whether for face or hair.

When my trusted skincare therapist first prescribed a facial oil to treat the fine lines that had appeared on my forehead literally overnight, I recoiled in horror. As a teenager, I suffered from regular hormonal breakouts and, despite the fact that my skin has changed considerably now that I’m in my early 30s, I’m still in the habit of picking out products with the term ‘oil-free’ boldly emblazoned across the front. Why on earth would I want to slather a greasy layer of oil across my face, I wondered? As it turns out, the right face oil can clear up your pores, soften your skin (and hair!) and even result in a dewy, more youthful complexion.

As it turns out, most synthetic and natural oils have a similar composition to your skin’s own moisture barrier. Itchy, dry skin is often as a result of a damaged moisture barrier, so it makes sense that adding oil to your regimen will encourage your skin to heal itself, essentially “filling” the holes in the moisture barrier and repairing your skin for a softer, smoother appearance. Some oils – like anti-inflammatory lavender, chamomile and rose oils – even have the ability to soothe irritated skin, while others (think argan, camellia and sunflower oils) promote collagen production for skin that’s noticeably firmer and plumper.

If you have an oily skin type that’s prone to blemishes and acne, you may be surprised to learn – as I was – that your best bet when it comes to choosing an effective cleanser would be an oil-based cleanser. If you think of it in terms of adding a few drops of water to oil, it becomes clear: oil rejects water, leaving little water bubbles floating on the surface of the oil. The same thing applies to your skin: when you wash your face and rinse with water, any excess sebum clogging your pores remains stubbornly in place; it’s only when you add an oil-based cleanser that you’re able to rinse away the grease and grime properly. Skin Creamery Oil-Milk Cleanser (R375) is a luxurious cleanser that goes on as an indulgent oil, but soon transforms into a milk once water is added to ensure that all impurities are easily and effectively rinsed from your skin. A word of caution to those with drier skins: stay clear of oil-based cleansers as these will strip the natural oils found in your skin, when you should really be focusing on adding more oil to boost hydration. This can be done by adding a face oil to your evening beauty routine – Skinderm’s Intense Nourishing Facial Oil (R420) is a firm favourite. It contains vitamin C and E to revitalise and nourish moisture-depleted skin, while protecting against free radical damage and helping to improve the appearance of existing pigmentation.

DID YOU KNOW?

As well as giving skin a nourishing hit of hydration, oils can help your moisturiser to work even harder and better. The humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, etc) contained in your moisturiser draw more moisture into your skin, and applying face oil over the top of this will ensure that this excess hydration is ‘locked in’ for longer lasting moisture. A common mistake that many women make is applying oil before moisturiser, as you would do with a serum. This is a big no-no –  moisturisers aren’t able to penetrate through oil, but oil is able to penetrate through creams and lotions so it’s best to apply your chosen oil only after your moisturiser.

Perhaps the easiest way to introduce oils into your beauty routine is to begin with a body oil or hair oil. Hair oils in particular have enjoyed increasing popularity over the past few years, with the renowned argan oil being at the top of our must-try list. The original MoroccanOil Hair Treatment contains argan oil and leaves your hair looking and feeling soft, supple and shiny, and has gone on to inspire a whole new category in hair care.

I’m also a big fan of My Abby Abyssinian Hair and Scalp Oil (R249), which is a recent discovery I stumbled upon at this yea’s ProBeauty Expo in Johannesburg. This lightweight oil softens and nourishes the hair shaft, while enhancing its shine – and all without weighing it down or leaving it looking oily. In fact, what differentiates My Abby from so many other hair oils is the fact that it can be used on the scalp – I like adding a couple of drops to my shampoo to help treat a dry, itchy scalp. My Abby also has a hair oil specifically formulated for ethnic hair types to help soften, nourish, and prevent breakage – you can read more here.

Hair oils are great at creating a protective barrier during the summer months, so now is as good a time as ever to invest in one. Simply add a few drops of oil to your hair before stepping into the pool or ocean to create a barrier that will protect your hair from the damaging effects of salt water and chlorine, as well as preventing your colour from fading in the sun.

Regardless of your skin (or hair) type, it’s clear that an oil will not only improve your appearance over time, but it will go a long way in treating specific concerns too. It’s no wonder, then, that natural oils have played an important role in beauty rituals for centuries: Helen of Troy favoured olive oil, while Cleopatra was fond of almond oil. If it’s good enough for these famed beauties, I’m certainly willing to give oils a go!

The best beauty advice… according to YOU!

A couple of weeks ago, we put up an Instagram post asking our fellow Beauty Warriors what their best beauty advice is.

There were so many pearls of wisdom, that we thought we’d share them all with you in a blog post. Read on for some of the best beauty advice… according to YOU!

“Clean your face before bedtime, doesn’t matter how tired you are. Remove your make up and give your skin an opportunity to breath and restore itself while you sleep.” – Tanya from Annie Two Cents blog

“Disinfect the screen of your mobile phone. They are immense germ carriers and can cause havoc on your skin.” – Ayesha, beauty expert and owner of Urban Bliss Wellness Spa

“Over-peeling and over-exfoliating leads to skin being even more dry and dull. Stick to exfoliating just once a week or so. After washing your face, use a towel and pat dry as opposed to harsh wiping, which can cause harm. It’s important to drink plenty of water, but it’s also vital to have a good skin care routine. Investing in good skin care is the way to healthy glowing skin. Never wash your face using hot water – instead, use lukewarm water. Hot water tends to make one’s face much more red. Lastly, don’t pop pimples no matter what. Use a spot treatment instead.” – Seri from Style With Me Pretty blog

“Never sleep with makeup on, and use SPF every day – including during winter.” – Nisa from Belle Blush blog

“I’m obsessed with SPF lately, and we all know the importance of taking makeup off before bed, enough sleep and water. It’s worth mentioning that you need to clean your makeup tools (brushes and sponges) around once a week so that you don’t spread germs all over your precious face!” – Camilla from Jane Wonder blog

“Use a Muslin or facecloth after cleansing to get rid of excess makeup, you will be surprised to see how much makeup is still left over!” – Amy Olden, makeup artist (see here for website)

We thought these were all such wonderful tips, and well worth sharing. A big thank you to all the beauties that took the time to share their advice with us!

Do you have some beauty advice of your own? Pop your tips in the comments sections below – we love hearing from our fellow Beauty Warriors!

What we love most: Those Twiggy lashes and her modern take on blue eyeshadow. Oh, and did we mention that we’re all kinds of obsessed with her gorgeous ponytail?

What we’d change: We would’ve added some bold, statement earrings to really capitalise on the retro vibe.

Amandla Stenberg

The bun-ponytail hybrid is turning heads this season, and Amandla’s incredible take on this trend is by far the best style we’ve seen.

Katherine Langford

The 13 Reasons Why stunner knocked it out of the park with her tousled ponytail (paired with a sensational, over-sized bow) and Cleopatra-esque liner look.

What we love most: That magnificent eyeliner (we love the glints of purple liner), the enormous black bow, and the tousled waves over her shoulder.

What we’d change: It looks as though a lipstick touch-up is in order, and we’d go easier on the blush.

Olivia Munn’s tousled hair and beautifully defined eyes complement her deep green velvet dress perfectly.

What we love most: That inner corner highlight, and the pop of teal liner that matches her dress.

What we’d change: Nothing!

When both Kim K and Westworld’s Tessa Thompson debut braids at the same event, you know that they’re about to be bigger than ever!

What we love most: The eye-catching highlights in her braids, as well as the pop of pink on eyes.

What we’d change: A little hint of blush and some lipstick would’ve go amiss.

Zendaya

Consistently at the top of our – and everyone else’s – best beauty round ups, it seems that Zendaya can do no wrong!

What we love most: Zendaya’s slicked back, wet-look hair, her full brows, and that beautiful eyeshadow.
