Own Your Style in 2020

New Year, new look, new you! It sounds all a bit clichéd but hey, it’s the 20’s and style trends change so quickly. Does that mean with the new decade you need to shop a new wardrobe? I sat down with Janine Starkey who is a style and image strategist and owner of Tweak and Style and asked her how you could get you to own your look in 2020.

The first thing I notice about Janine is her exuberant confidence and her killer animal print stilettos. Getting to know her a little I learned Janine has dressed royalty, moguls and everyone in between. She had just spoke at a corporate event the day before for a blue chip company, one of the questions she asked the group which I thought was really intriguing “How do you want people to perceive you when you walk into a room, use 3 adjectives?” I asked if this was in terms of style or personality and she said that it about your overall presence as it relates to how she would build our personal style. Try it and see what answers you come up with, for me it was dynamic, confidant and approachable.

What should we look for in 2020 in terms of style, was on the top of my list to ask. “Originality – finding your own style, your own look and make that work for you. I believe there is no such thing as fashion anymore” Janine goes on to say “Every woman is the epitome of fashion when she dresses for her body shape and in her colour palette.”

So how do you find your personal style or originality? Starkey says, “You need to know who you are and what you want to project. What you want people to see when they meet you for the first time.” This leads back to those adjectives you put down, it also goes a little deeper, as you need to dive into a holistic overview of yourself. She elaborates “ In a consultation we unpack that and develop a look for you based on personality, perception, lifestyle, colour, body assets and flaws, and so much more – all that and we shop accordingly.”

What are the 5 Essentials you need in your wardrobe?

Janine says “There is no such thing really but if I were to choose:

  1. A print – we call them connectors which are a clothing item that can be worn multiple ways. Beauty Warriors Tip: if prints scare you, start off with a fabulous scarf, headband or shoes.
  2. An expensive pair of go to black trousers that make you feel amazing when you are in them. We say it’s worth the investment and you can wear them with almost anything.
  3. A brilliant bra that actually fits, yes you will be surprised how many of us are not fitted properly.
  4. Pair of shoes that make your ass look amazing and you feel sexy in them.
  5. Chocolate eyeshadow – that can create a smokey eye, fill in your eyebrows or give your eye a soft eyeliner.

If I were to take a risk in my style where should I start?

Janine immediately said, Shoes for sure – it’s a way to play, you can wear a navy suit with a white camisole and a flaming yellow shoe and look like you stepped out of Vogue.”

And to end off, I wanted to ask a question that has often come up in conversation over the last few years. To match or not to match, what is the verdict? And I loved Janine’s answer “NEVER match, always connect pieces.”

What echoed throughout our chat, was that you need to feel confident in what you wear and bear in mind the image you would like to project to the world.

Only The Best for Your Breasts

Would you believe that 80% of women wear the wrong bra size! It shouldn’t surprise me, my friends have often complained about their bra strap cutting into them or their underwire poking into bits it shouldn’t. You can relate, right? There are days you can’t wait to get home just to take your bra off! But there is absolutely no reason it should be like this.

Our February Beauty Warriors event was held at The Bra Guru’s flagship store in Craighall and theme was all around ‘Owning your feminine’. We had managing director and expert bra fitter, Taryn Palacios gave us first-hand information on what NO ONE ever told you about bras. The first misconception she broke was the difference between a bra measurement and a bra fitting.

Everyone has been into department store at some stage to have a bra measurement, but trust me – it is no comparison to a bra fitting. What Taryn said made absolute sense:

“A measurement is simply a guideline, I would be very wary of someone giving you your size based on a measurement alone. Your true size is determined by the style of bra that suits you and that is why we recommend a bra fitting service over a measurement.”

She was 100% right: I had my first ever bra fitting with her at the event, a service that they offer complimentary.

Confession first: I am one of those women who were fixated with bra size. Hear me out, I started off with a perfect B cup, took the pill and sized up, breast fed my daughter for half a second and sized up again. As she grew, so did my breast size, but thankfully my size 34 band size stayed stable. I honestly thought, I would have a nervous breakdown if I had needed anything larger than a D cup.

To my horror and shock, Taryn fitted me into a size 32” E-G cup, depending on the style. Once I got over myself, which took a while, and questioning her a hundred times over about the cup size, I am absolutely in-love with the fit of the styles we decided on. They give a beautiful silhouette in my clothes and great coverage, which is what I always wanted. I was definitely part of the clueless 80%.

Bra Guru caters for people of all shapes and sizes with band sizes from 28”-58” and sizes A-K cup.

Taryn went on to talk about what are the most common misconceptions about bras/bra fittings, here they are:

  • That all bras fit the same
  • Your size is the same throughout your life,
  • Bras are uncomfortable
  • Wire bras are more supportive than no-wire bras.

What can you expect during the fitting? Firstly, you don’t stand there starkers; neither does she fondle your breasts. It is all very discreet, in a beautifully appointed room. Taryn stands behind you and whisks in and out with different bra styles, all the time, monitoring fit and comfort.

Our bra expert tip: when fitting, bend forward slightly once you have tried on a bra and gently scoop your breast inwards, to see how the bra would fit once it has shifted in the day for the best fit.

“90% of the support of a bra comes from the back band and only 10% should come from the shoulder band, not the other way around. It is important to know that you shouldn’t be wearing the same bra for years, as they stretch. Bras do have an expiration date, but a good quality one can last you longer. When your bra starts to become uncomfortable it is a sign that you need a new style or size.” says Taryn are some of the essentials you should be aware of, she goes on to say, “If your bra band is riding up your back that is a true sign that your bra is now too big and offering you NO support. “When it comes to bra shopping look for style that a versatile and one you can wear with most clothing items, we highly recommend our Perfect T-shirt Bra.

I asked Taryn, how would I tell the different bra styles or different styles for different sizes? “It can be very tricky because so many times we will wear a style that is not doing what it needs to do out of desperation. If your breasts are not fully covered and the band around your body does not feel a little bit firm then I would say the style is not for you. We also have to consider bra style vs breast shape, the shape of your breasts will also determine what may and may not work for you.”

She finished the session off by talking about aftercare advice to make your underwear last, “All intimate wear benefits from hand-washing, this is more of a quick rinse in mild soapy water. Garments should be left to dry away from harsh direct sunlight. Bras with thicker foam cups must be stored differently to avoid damaging the foam.”

When I asked Taryn, what makes the Bra Guru so unique; her answer was “Our professional one-on-one service sets us apart. When it comes to finding the perfect size and style, private and professional service is paramount. We offer comfortable fitting rooms where all the bras are brought in for you and are fitted to make sure the size and style is correct. Bra shopping must be quick, discreet and painless, and we can guarantee this at any of our studios! We are also home to The Perfect Bra.”

Five foods, for that Lucky Feeling

LOVE is in the air, my friends! With valentine’s day over it doesn’t mean that we need to stop spoiling our loved ones in the bedroom…

February is upon us and it is the month of love with everyone looking forward to nothing but appreciation, romance and a little bit of chocolate indulgence.

It is never a bad idea to let someone know that they are loved with a card, flowers or chocolates, but imagine this: after having a romantic night out, your partner now wants to continue the celebration in the bedroom, but what if you are just not feeling it?

Most people have days when they are just not in the mood, however if it were more frequent, low sex-drive could potentially put strain on your relationship.

Fortunately, for those who are struggling in the bedroom, there are ways to increase sex drive and one option may be as easy as changing up your diet.

Here are my 5 favorite fuel foods to increase libido and sex drive:

  1. Steak – One of the main reasons couples stop having sex is because they are tired, fatigued and stressed out. There is however a biological component that comes into play: fatigue in women is due to iron deficiency. This is a common deficiency and can result in making anyone feel like getting intimate is last of their list, but red meat is full of iron and one of my top foods to increase libido.

  1. Asparagus – Did you know a women’s libido is often inhibited by the imbalance of hormones? To regain balance of our hormones it is suggested that we add Asparagus to our diet. Rich in Vitamin B6, asparagus can control our levels of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone, it also decreases prolactin, another hormone that decreases libido in women.

Asparagus also known for containing folate, which increases histamine in our bodies, which is an essential component for maintaining our sex drive.

  1. Dark Chocolate – With a sinfully good taste, dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher) shouldn’t have any trouble making its way onto your dessert menu as one of your go-to aphrodisiacs this month. Research has shown that women who made a daily habit of eating dark chocolate, had a higher sex drive than women who did not. Dark chocolate contains phenylethylamine, known as “the love drug”, which is closely related to amphetamines, (a central nervous stimulant) that can give us the feeling of alertness and content.
  2. Watermelon – A popular summer fruit, or a natural form of Viagra?

Watermelon is rich in L-citrulline, an amino acid that supports the body by optimizing blood flow when converted into L-arginine and then to nitric oxide. Just like Viagra, L-citrulline increases blood flow to sexual organs but without the negative side effects.

  1. Lastly, and personally my favourite, is Red Wine. This delicious elixir is beneficial in antioxidants that triggers nitric oxide production in the blood, which relaxes artery walls. As with many foods on this list that increase blood flow down south, red wine is simultaneously the best way to boost your libido and calm those pre-date jitters.

Food, love and sex have a long history, and one that is rooted in our DNA. It is hard to feel romantic on an empty stomach, so if you are looking to feed your partner in hope to heighten sensations closely related to those experienced when being intimate, I strongly suggested to consider these “aphrodisiac-like” foods when cooking this month.

Last Minute Valentines Day Idea’s

Need Solutions Quik For Valentine’s day?

If you fall into any of these categories then this is a must-read article for you:

  1. You woke up at the last minute thinking it is hopeless there is no way you could pull off a romantic Valentine’s celebration.
  2. Your purse strings are so tight after overindulging during the December holidays from which you are still recovering.
  3. You are a mom and possibly working too and you overwhelmed and celebrating Valentine’s Day does not feel like it fits into your busy schedule, where your kids take priority.

Team Beauty Warriors have put on their thinking caps and come up with a well-coordinated Valentine’s at-home strategy that won’t break the bank.

For décor at home or Valentine’s gift, swop exorbitantly priced flowers for romantic potted plants like miniature roses, orchids, jasmine, lavender or succulents, can be bought at most supermarkets. As an added bonus, they will continue to flourish a lot longer that cut flowers – perhaps a better gesture to symbolise your relationship.

Start the day with a surprise love note in your partner’s lunch-box. You can do one for each of your kids as well and cut out their sandwiches in heart shapes. Let them join in and write out letters to each member of the family that they can read out at dinner.

Set the tone with a mushy or not so mushy text message, take your pick:

Send a screen shot of the food your ordered to be delivered to that someone special’s workplace accompanied with…’Happy Valentine’s, Mr D is on its way with your Hut Double from Pizza Hut with extra olives – thinking of your tummy too’. End it off with a few winking emoji’s.

Or… ‘I want to say that the best decision I made was choosing you, but I would be lying if I say it was any choice at all Happy Valentine’s!’

Let’s get into it; now that we got the décor and set the tone, the meal doesn’t need to be the stressful part. What if we told you that you can have dinner and dessert for under R150? Yip, shop from Woolworths and, it feeds four https://www.woolworths.co.za/content/article/w-today/dinner-and-dessert-for-under-r150/_/A-cmp209153 . Also check out your local favourite dinner place, they may have great specials on takeout’s for that evening.

After dinner, create a spa bath at home. For this you can purchase Spalicious candles at R350 each https://spalicious.co.za/product-category/candles/ which double as a massage medium too if you are feeling extra romantic. Alternatively, Africology’s scented candles are R430

A budget-friendly choice would be Soy Lites Balance mini collection from just R30 each https://www.soylites.co.za/products/balance-mini-travel-lites-15ml.

Next up, a luxurious bubble or therapy bath our picks are Phytomer Oligomer Wellbeing bath that eases away sore and tight muscles R466 or Elimis Aching Muscle Super Soak R945 which has energizing and uplifting extracts that releases tension and stress too.

To make this spa bath special have a bowl of strawberries, a bottle of sparkly or mix up a sensational Roses Cordials cocktail/mocktails.

We all about giving back to yourself this month so don’t forget to spend a few minutes on yourself, give yourself a body scrub for that satin skin feel, a face mask for a skin glow and take time to massage your feet when applying cream or give yourself a mini pedicure.

From us to you #OwnYourFeminine

Hammam- The Insider Scoop

Whether you are a spa regular or enjoy it as an occasional spoil, you know what to expect – facial, Mani, Pedi, massage, and these are amazing – big fan myself – however, it can limit your exposure to the many other great offerings that exist out there.

My recent obsession has been the Hammam Spa with its rich and diverse history, so allow me a moment to pique your interest. The influence of the Hammam, or Turkish bath, which originated in the Middle East and quickly rose to popularity during the Roman Empire, is still seen in spas today.

But what is a Hamman? The word itself translates to “public bath place” and traditionally, these were spaces where people would come to cleanse before prayers. A Hammam and its practices differ from culture to culture, having been integrated into many countries such as Morocco, India, Rome, Egypt & Greece, however, a notable aspect of it, is that Hammams have an emphasis on running water for cleansing, but more specifically, hot steam, rather than submersion into a bath of hot water.

The Moroccan Hammam was seen as a place to socialize, where the rich and poor would gather, stripped of both clothing and class-division, separated only by gender.

With the introduction of private bathrooms in homes, the necessity for public bath places has declined since its inception, but the benefits cannot be overlooked.

In modern day spas, the influence of the Hammam still prevails. The use of steam in spas is an already established medium. Enveloping the body in a hot steam can help the body in many ways, including improved circulation which boosts cardiovascular health, it purifies the skin and detoxes the body, relaxes muscles and loosens joints.

Coupled with steam rooms, treatments can include body exfoliation, massages and various additions of aromatherapy – this will depend on the spa.

The evolution of Hammam and the integration into spas has allowed for a deeper exploration and inclusion of addition wellbeing practices in order to boost physical and psychological wellbeing.

Hammam Turkish Bath & Spa (R1950pp) at Yadah Castle in Pretoria, boasts several Hammam journeys that their guests may embark on, ranging from Turkish, to Persian, to Oriental or Egyptian inspired experiences.

Their Turkish Delight Rose Ritual begins with a welcome drink with fruit, before relaxation begins with an aromatic foot spa and foot ritual. This is followed by the Hammam Ritual, which utilizes a pure silk blend with rose essential oil and rosehip, which contain potent anti-aging benefits. Guests are then treated to a 60min Turkish Rose massage and uplifting hydrating facial. The experience is finished off with a lunch consisting of either a wrap or meze platter.

Aromatherapy is used to metaphorically transport a guest to exotic faraway lands, while the journey itself lends to a more well-rounded, full experience beyond just cleansing and relaxation.

Of course when one thinks of bathing, it is often done in the nude, so is this true of hammam spas? Well… sometimes. More often than not in a modern spa setting, they will insist on you wearing a bathing suit, however should you visit a more traditional hammam, you may find yourself baring yourself to all and sundry. Always double check the requirements beforehand to avoid any uncomfortable situations.

In South Africa, public bathing is a thing of the past, however, it’s rich history lives on in spas, and you owe yourself the indulgence, for both body and mind.

2020 Superfoods Simplified

How is your New Year’s Resolution to be healthier and fitter going? Is it going, going, gone? …and we are only in February!

At the start of each year, and especially after over-indulging during the holidays, most people, myself included, make declarations to various commitments of health and fitness.

If 2020 is your year but you are feeling overwhelmed by the wealth of (occasionally contradictory) information on healthy foods and are at a loss of what to buy, I have simplified it for you.

Allow me to introduce you to “superfoods” – these are primarily plant-based, but extend to fish and diary as well. Superfoods boost healthy complexion, nails, hair and increased energy levels but are also nutritionally dense, therefore good for one’s overall health. The key to a healthy diet is to consume a variety of these “superfoods”; here are five foods that are strong sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other beneficial nutrients that should power-pack your meals and snacks.

  1. Cruciferous vegetables are a diverse group, which grow in different colours, shape and sizes and share several nutritional benefits. These delicious vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and kale, are rich in folate, vitamin A, C and K, they are also believed to have plant-based compounds that may help lower inflammation and reduce the risk of developing cancer. It is suggested that we need at least 21/2 cups of vegetables a day, cooked or uncooked, as they are high in fibre and low in calories that will help you feel full and satisfied without overeating.
  1. Berries, both delicious and rich in anti-oxidants, they are additionally packed full of health benefits. Small, soft, round and of various colours, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries are full of vitamins and minerals, fibre and high levels of antioxidants. Incorporating these popular fruits into your diet may help prevent and reduce symptoms of certain heart conditions in young women, they can be eaten as a snack on their own or used to make a refreshing smoothie for any time of the day.

  1. Salmon. Firm, reddish in colour, tender and one of the most popular fish choices thanks to its rich and buttery flavour. Salmon is low in saturated fat and a good source of protein, salmon is a great source of vitamin B12, potassium and other nutrients such as iron and vitamin D. The true beauty behind adding salmon into your diet is its wealth in omega 3 – fatty acids, these are “essential” fatty acids that your body cannot make but play such an important role in reducing the risk cardiovascular diseases, some types of cancer, dementia, Alzheimer’s and other cognitive diseases.

  1. For those following a plant-based diet, Quinoa is not only known for being a versatile ingredient but is also a complete protein. Quinoa contains all nine essential amino acids which is vital for supporting muscle development. Naturally high in fiber, healthy omega 3 – fatty acids and anti-inflammatory phytonutrients, this wheat-free and protein alternative is most beneficial in the prevention and treatment of diseases.

  1. To further boost your meals and snacks, try combing a variety of nuts and seeds with low energy dense foods (such as vegetables). Nuts and seeds are a good substitute for meats, fish and eggs as they contain protein, fat, iron, zinc and niacin and with regular consumption is proven to be beneficial against heart disease and diabetes.

When making resolutions to be healthier, try and avoid fad diets, as they are seldom sustainable. At the end of the day, research has shown that the ideal diet or nutritional plan is one that is mainly plant-based, with a variety of fruits, vegetables, wholegrains and healthy animal products. There is a wealth of delicious and healthy foods to explore, whether they are being called super or not. This “superfoods” list is a good starting point into eating healthy, but the true secret to maintaining a healthy lifestyle, is adopting a balanced diet without the restriction of all food groups.

Relieving Migraines Through Touch?…. WHAT??

Body Stress Release…
What is it?
How can it help my stress levels?

One of our Beauty Warriors went on a mission to uncover some truths about what Body Stress Release is all about with professional practitioner Stuart Garvie….

Misconception number 1…Isn’t it just like massaging?

No, although some of it might feel like a massage, BSR’s focus is to activate the body’s healing abilities through a precise technique, not to stretch out tight muscles, since these tight muscles are often a reaction to the stress built up in your body in the first place.

The next thing most people want to know is what is it and how can it help me?

We have put together some FAQ to help with the process of understanding and delving into the truths of this awesome treatment.

Does BSR really work?

I first found BSR after a car accident, this left me with anxiety about driving I suffered with neck problems, and nothing worked to fix it. The frustration of not being healthy and not being able to live my daily life to the fullest got to me and I eventually gave in to family requests for me to try BSR. It worked and it has worked for me ever since. It worked so well and it changed my life so much that I decided that I would study it further and be able to change people’s lives like I had my life changed.

Don’t believe me yet? Here is a direct quote from one of my clients about her 9 year old grandson, who now comes for sessions once every month; “Thank you Stuart for helping my Grandson who was being bullied at school. His confidence is on the mend, and with a few more sessions I am confident that this bad experience will be healed.”
There are dozens of testimonies just like this, and for so many more problems that people face daily and for more unique problems out there. We are here to help as many people as we can, and would love to help you.

Stuart Garvie, answered some of the more FAQ
Who can benefit from Body Stress Release (BSR)?

Anyone, from people sitting behind a desk all day and feeling the stress build up in their back and shoulders to people who are active at every moment but have always had that knee that gives them trouble. BSR is for everyone!

Is there an age limit to BSR?
No, none at all. BSR is extremely gentle and adaptive to any age and body, from newborn babies to the elderly.

How does it differ from other health practices?
We do not diagnose or treat any specific condition or disease, and do not focus on one body part either. Its primary focus is to locate and release tension stored in the muscles so that the body, as a whole, can start its’ own healing process.

How many sessions will I need?
It varies greatly from person to person but, we recommend that every client come for at least 3 initial sessions and at the end of the 3rd session we convene on the results and work from there.

I have had a lot of operations though, can you still work on me?
Yes, most definitely! Although we do not work directly on replacements we do release stored tension surrounding the areas that will help with mobility and function.

Do I need to undress or wear any special clothes?
No, clients remain fully clothed with their shoes on during the session.

Just the near mention of a Deep Cleanse Facial sends most people running for the hills, in anticipation of extractions. So the question Begs……to Cleanse or not to Cleanse, is it really necessary?

While there are many ways to look at this I would like to break it down on an Anatomical and Physiological level, no complicated science jargon, promise.

As we know the skin is the largest organ providing protection from bacteria, microbes and harsh chemicals. Is also responsible for temperature control, prevents large amounts of moisture loss and reacts to sensation.

Skin also plays an important role aesthetically. People can often make assumptions as to your internal health and wellbeing by just looking at your skin. It’s called the mirror effect; whereby internal body conditions such as stress and illness reflects in some way on the skin. The right care helps to preserve the skin’s health and beauty. So yes, deep cleansing facials assist in maintaining good skin health.

Let’s take it a step further, the skin is made up of 3 layers- Hypodermis bottom layer which is the fatty cushioning layer , Dermis being the functional middle layer, mainly responsible for skin structure and the Epidermis being the top layer.

The epidermis is the visible protective layer, holds hydration but also shows all the skins tell tales such as blackheads (comedones), white heads (milia), breakouts, sebum production (oiliness) and all associated dry and ageing skin symptoms.

Regular cell turnover every 28 days is imperative in the epidermis; it does however change with age and certain skin conditions. This process is extremely important as it regulates the re-birth of new cells and sloughing of dead skin build up on the outer epidermis (stratum corneum). The continuous process maintains the skin’s strength, helping wear and tear. Through, thorough exfoliation deep cleanse facials assist in sloughing the extra dead skin build up bringing new healthy skin to the surface.

A very common problem that arises is when cells from the lining of pores (keratinocytes) being to shed they can mix with sebum and clog the pore. This is the precursor to acne. Pores may also appear larger, if oil builds up inside pores, or if tissue surrounding the pore becomes agitated. I must admit that together with a good exfoliation, extraction wins the gold medal for combating these skin issues.

So the verdict is in deep Cleansing Facials do assist with a more radiant, healthy looking skin.

I would suggest having them every 3-4 weeks especially if there are visible changes in the skin. For very pustular acne I would consult a dermatologist.

Expect to pay anything from R350 up.
