Top Tips For Better Skin… Fast!

Top Tips For Better Skin… Fast!

Busy, modern life (and trying to juggle a full time career, a thriving social life, and – for some of us – motherhood) means that there’s often not a lot of time left to care for yourself or for your skin.

We asked Stephanie-Anne, a product specialist at Optiphi, to share her top skincare tips and life hacks that will help you care for – and fall in love with – your skin in a flash. Read on for her best skincare advice…

Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse

“This is by far the most important step in loving your skin,” says Stephanie-Anne. “Always cleanse and remove your make-up, no matter how late it is. Choose a cleanser that is the same pH as your skin, and one that is able to remove make-up and double-up as an exfoliator. Optiphi’s Facial Cleanser is the perfect 6-in-1 treatment to help save you time while building your natural skin barrier and providing a deep cleanse at the same time.”

Invest in antioxidants

Stephanie-Anne recommends using topical anti-oxidants, such as Vitamin C, L-Carnosine, and Vitamin B3, to help slow down skin ageing. Look out for an antioxidant-rich moisturiser that will also moisturise and protect your skin.

Be sun smart

If you don’t already do so, it’s important that you start applying a sunscreen daily – even if you spend most of your days in an office. “If you can see light, UV-rays can see you,” cautions Stephanie-Anne.

Boost your skin’s moisture levels

Start incorporating products that contain Hyaluronic acid into your skincare routine to ensure that your skin is well-hydrated from the inside out. “Just like your internal organs need water to function optimally, so does the skin – which is also an organ, albeit an external one,” explains Stephanie-Anne.

Remember that skincare is a long-term investment, and that the more love and dedication you give your skin, the better it will look in the long run. Interested in learning more? Click here to find out more about Optiphi’s range of skincare products or to find your nearest stockist.

Have you heard about GoBeauty?

Have you heard about GoBeauty?

We recently stumbled upon GoBeauty, South Africa’s leading beauty booking website, and we’re hooked!

Designed to take some of the the hassle out of your busy life (and ideal for those who break out in hives at just the mere thought of making a call), GoBeauty allows you to search for and book your beauty treatments directly via their website or the GoBeauty app.

We put GoBeauty to the test when booking our treatment at Cosmos Wellness Spa, and we were amazed at how quick and easy the whole process was. It was as simple as typing ‘facial Kempton Park’ into the search bar on the homepage, and voila! A selection of possible treatments and spas came up on screen – we simply had to click and choose the one we liked the look of most!

You can even create your own private page on the GoBeauty website, where you can add all your favourite spas and salons, write up reviews of the treatments you’ve experienced or spas you’ve visited, and even buy and send gift vouchers to spoil that special someone – regardless of where in SA they live.

Now why didn’t we think of that?

If you’re anything like us, you love going for a much-needed pamper on occasion… but often, booking an appointment is more effort than it’s worth! There’ve been countless times that we’ve called a salon in the hopes of booking a treatment on a specific day or time, only to be told that they don’t have availability. What ensues is going backwards and forwards in our diaries, trying to find a date and time that suits us and matches up with the salon’s available appointments. By the time we’ve hung up the phone, we’re completely frazzled and in desperate need of said spa treatment… sooner rather than later!

GoBeauty takes the hassle out of booking appointments by allowing to you browse spas and salons, then requesting a booking on your chosen day and time. The spa or salon will then call you back to confirm your booking, or the closest available appointment. We requested our booking for 10am on a Friday morning, and the spa in question (Cosmos Wellness Retreat) called back within seconds confirming our appointment. It could be simpler!

But don’t take out word for it – why not try GoBeauty out for yourself by heading over to their website (click here) and booking your first appointment? Happy pampering, Beauty Warriors!

5 Home Spa Tips for Valentine’s Day

5 Home Spa Tips for Valentine’s Day

Let’s be honest: Valentine’s Day can really eat into your thinly-stretched budget (that’s still trying to recover from the holidays). We’d all love to spend Valentine’s Day being pampered and indulged at a luxurious spa, but in reality, it’s not always possible. Why not try creating a romantic spa experience at home instead?

It doesn’t take much effort, and with a little bit of planning and creativity you can transform your home into a luxury spa. You will need to start with a shopping list and a budget in the region of R500 to R600, though…

Shopping list:
  • Invest in a professional massage candle. They are higher quality and provide a double benefit: amazing essential oil fragrances and, once the candle starts to melt, the oil can be used as a massage oil. Try the Butter Dish candle from Indulgence (R150 for 60ml) or Soy Lites Classic Massage Votive (R65 for 75ml).
  • Buy a pack of tea light candles to set the mood. These typically cost between R80-120 and can be found at most department stores, pharmacies, or speciality candle stores.
  • Bath oil is an essential part of making your Valentine’s Day a success. Lillian Terry Relaxing Bath Oil (R90) is a high-end, pre-blended aromatherapy product that will enhance relaxation and relieve stress at the same time. We also love Spalicious Cocoa Marshmallow Soak (R50) to deeply cleanse your skin, while offering moisturising and soothing benefits at the same time.
  • Buy a bunch of red roses five days before Valentine’s Day (that’s today!) to avoid paying triple the price the day before. This will set you back about R120.
  • Chocolate-covered strawberries are always a winner in the romantic department, and should cost roughly R40 if you purchase them from your local green grocer, along with chocolate.
Now that you have your shopping out of the way, here are 5 great tips to turn your home into a luxury spa:

A sensual snack

Coat your strawberries in melted chocolate, and store in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to give the chocolate time to set. Keep aside 2 roses to decorate the plate.

Set the mood

Use half your bunch of roses and remove the rose petals. Scatter these strategically along a pathway to your bathroom, along with the tea lights (you can place the tea lights in different shaped bowls and vases).

Run a beautiful bath

If you live in one of the areas of the country that is currently fortunate enough not to be drought-stricken, you can run yourself a bath, making sure that it’s slightly warmer than usual. This gives you time to prep everything else without the water cooling down too much. Add your special bath oil or soak, and a few more rose petals.

The little details

Pour your favourite drink, set it next to the bath on a tray along with two clean face cloths. (Run your face cloths through cold water, then roll them up before you do this. This will add a truly luxurious touch to your at-home spa experience).

Massage and moisturise

Lastly, light your massage candle just before stepping into the bath. This gives the candle sufficient time to melt, so that you have enough soy wax to use as a massage oil. Ask your partner to give you a back, neck, and shoulder massage using the oil after your bath – you could even take turns to give each other a massage. You could also use the wax as a body moisturiser after your bath.

Will you be setting up your own at-home spa this Valentine’s Day? We’d love to know if you try any of these tips, or if you have your own ideas for recreating a spa experience at home, so share them with us in the comments!

Our Pick: Cosmos Wellness Retreat in Johannesburg

Our Pick: Cosmos Wellness Retreat in Johannesburg

In desperate need of a little time out and some soul pampering? You simply must pay Cosmos Wellness Retreat a visit. Situated in the heart of Kempton Park, Johannesburg, this tranquil sanctuary is perfectly placed to offer the busy, modern woman an escape from the stresses of daily living.

Not only does Cosmos offer a wide variety of pampering spa treatments, ranging from luxurious manicures and pedicures to stress-relieving body treatments and the most indulgent facials, but they also have a dedicate yoga studio on site. You can choose between a handful of different practices, including traditional yoga, Mysore style yoga, or high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and classes work on a Karma-based concept where you contribute the value you’d like to receive from the class. (There’s a suggested contribution of at least R90 per class – if you’re able to contribute R90 or more per class, it’s suggested that you do so, but if you’re unable to contribute the full R90, feel free to contribute what you can).

Although I plan on visiting Cosmos for a yoga class soon, I was particularly interested in finding out more about their spa facilities and the various treatments they have on offer. I was treated to the Esse Probiotic Plus Facial (R950), which was 90 minutes of pure bliss and consisted of a deep cleanse, exfoliation, clay mask, and a divine facial massage. My therapist, Candice, went one step further and massaged my tired, achy feet while waiting for the face mask to work its magic – an added extra that was much-needed and deeply appreciated. I’ve been for many facials during my years in the beauty industry, and I can honestly say that this was one of the most relaxing facials I’ve ever had. It was well worth the drive from Randburg to Kempton Park, and I’ll definitely be booking an appointment with Cosmos again in the near future. Next time, I’m keen to try their Luxury Pedicure (R390 for 90 minutes), if only to make use of their beautiful pedicure station.

In keeping with their holistic approach, Cosmos makes use of only the very best certified organic, locally sourced, and cruelty-free skincare products – think Esse Organic Skincare, Regime A, Naked Cherry (for waxing), and Vita Liberata’s luxury self-tanning products, to name just a few. They also offer mobile services, so you can indulge in group beauty treatments at home or at work for a small, additional fee per person.

Cosmos Wellness Retreat – 36 Pienaar Avenue, Aston Manor, Kempton Park. Call (011) 970 1747 or 073 273 2750 to make a booking, or email escape@cosmos.joburg. You can also book online via GoBeauty.
