Quick beauty fixes for post-holiday skin

Quick beauty fixes for post-holiday skin

There’s no denying the positive effect that the summer holidays have on mind and soul, but your skin is often subject to any number of damaging factors that leave your skin looking a little worse for wear.

From the sun’s harsh UV rays and the drying effects of air conditioning, to a lack of sleep and a poor diet, the holiday season can wreak havoc on your skin. Here are some of our top skin fixes for post-holiday skin.

Mama Mio Superstar in a Jar (R450)

This multi-functional super-balm is a handbag essential, especially during the summer months. Whether you’re battling sunburn or dry, cracked heels, or you’re looking for a quick-fix for frizzy, flyaway hair, Mama Mio’s Superstar in a Jar is the cure. It can even double up as a balm cleanser for when you’re in a pinch (like when your luggage goes missing on a long-haul flight). Apply it to chapped lips and dry cuticles, or as a nourishing treat for elbows, knees, and feet. It’s the perfect size for popping into your handbag, and it’s safe to use on even the most sensitive skins. It may be pricey but considering all its magical uses, we think it’s well worth it!

Team Dr Joseph Extra Sensitive Calming Serum (R1 120)

If your skin is looking dull and feeling dehydrated, it may be time to up your skincare game and introduce a hydrating serum that boasts soothing properties, like this luxe serum from Team Dr Joseph. This highly concentrated facial serum has a balancing effect on your skin, and will help to calm irritated and inflamed skin. It’s especially delicious when applied to skin that’s been exposed to too much sunshine.

Phytomer Oligomer Silhouette Contouring Enhancer Marine Bath

If you’ve overdone it in terms of eating these holidays, you need a handful of Phytomer’s Oligomer Silhouette Contouring Enhancer Marine Bath sachets. Step 1 in a customised 2-step contouring program designed to redefine contours and reshape your figure, the contents of this sachet also assist in remineralising and rejuvenating fatigued skin cells. Each sachet contains original sea water to help promote the breakdown of fat, while marine calcium helps to form up your skin. Simply empty the contents of the sachet in your bath, then sit back and soak up the goodness.

As well as using specially formulated skincare products designed to combat dryness, improve overall radiance, and calm inflamed skin, ensure that you hydrate from the inside out by drinking plenty of water. Prevent further damage by wearing sunscreen when you’re out in the sun, and if you’ve got a few late nights planned, make sure that you remove every last trace of makeup before hopping into bed.

5 quick and easy party-friendly manicures to try now!

They’re much easier than they look, and will turn heads wherever your go… let us know if you try them, and don’t forget to tag us in your pics over on Instagram!

Accent nail

When in doubt, draw attention to your mani with an accent nail. It’s quick, simple, and effective.

HOW TO: In this instance, a couple of shades of grey were used and accented with a silver glitter polish on the ring fingers. You can choose any shades you like, but just make sure that you apply a glittery polish to your ring finger for an extra dose of glam. It couldn’t be easier!

All out sparkle

Another super-easy mani that won’t fail to turn heads: apply two coats of your favourite glitter polish to each nail and allow to dry. The quickest and easiest festive mani ever!

HOW TO: In this case, it really is as simple as applying a couple of coats of nail polish to each nail. A hidden benefit of wearing glittery polish? You’re less likely to pick up on smudges and chips.

Two-tone nails

This two-tone mani will definitely get you noticed, and it’s so easy to do!

HOW TO: If you have steady hands, you can try freehand this, but we recommend that you use a little sticky tape to create even, straight edges. Apply a small piece of sticky tape diagonally across your nail, from on corner of your cuticle to the opposite tip of your nail. Choose any nail colour you’d like, apply a coat, and wait for it to dry. Make sure that the polish is 100% dry before removing the sticky tape, otherwise it might smudge. Once dry, remove the sticky tape, then apply your second nail colour. Allow to dry, apply a top coat, and voila! A pretty mani that’s pretty easy to boot!

Little triangles

This mani is very similar to the two-tone manicure described above, and equally as easy to recreate.

HOW TO: Simply use some sticky tape to create a little triangle at the base of your nail, then use your chosen colour to fill in the triangle. Allow to dry properly before peeling off the sticky tape. Apply a top coat to seal in your design. (TIP: You can also apply a glittery top coat for extra dazzle – it IS New Year’s Eve, after all!)

Gold Dots

This manicure couldn’t be simpler if you tried!

HOW TO: Apply two coats of a black, rich brown, or deep plum nail colour to your nails and allow to dry. Once dry, use the end of a bobby pin to create three little dots on your nails, using a gold nail polish. Wait for the polish to dry, then apply a top coat to seal in your design.

Beauty bloggers share their top beauty tips for travel

Beauty bloggers share their top beauty tips for travel

Whether you’re traveling by plane or headed on a summer road trip, there’s no denying that the process of getting to your holiday destination can wreak havoc on your skin, hair, and nails. We asked some of South Africa’s best beauty bloggers for their top beauty tips for travel, regardless of their mode of transport.

The majority of South Africa is finally on holiday, and thousands will be hitting the road (or boarding that plane) and leaving for their end-of-year break. If that includes you, here are some handy tips to ensure that your skin, hair, and nails stay in tip-top condition, regardless of your travel plans.

Camilla Corder & Jules da Silva, co-founders of All Dolled Up

“Our top tip would be to keep moisturised on the plane in order to prevent your skin from becoming dehydrated. In addition to drinking plenty of water, we like to use a combination of hyaluronic acid serums and creamy masks to lock in moisture and keep the skin bouncy and fresh.”

Aisha O’Reilly, art director and the blogger behind Aisha and Life

“I love to keep my makeup to the minimum, so rather than carrying separate products, I like to use one item that does multiple jobs. A good example would be a lip liner or chubby lip pencil that can triple up as a lipstick, liner, and blush.”

Chereen Strydom, creative director of Beauty Warriors and beauty blogger

“Going on road trips is one of my favourite things to do, and I think I’ve finally managed to find the perfect beauty routine to ensure that I arrive at my destination looking fresh and put-together, despite the long drive. I try to keep my makeup minimal and usually stick to wearing a tinted moisturiser or BB cream, and I always make sure that I have a hydrating facial mist in my bag. This not only helps to refresh my skin and keep me awake on the long drive, but it also helps to clean up my pre-schooler’s face – especially handy when I run out of wet wipes. Simply spray and use a tissue (or t-shirt, in a pinch) to wipe sticky little hands or a grubby face.”

Our Pick: Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector SPF50

Our Pick: Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector SPF50

A sunscreen is a sunscreen is a sunscreen… right? Not so! Our most recent summer find, Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector SPF50 (R517), is a brand-new broad-spectrum sunscreen that not only protects your skin against the sun’s damaging UV rays, but it also boasts a virtually invisible universal tint that instantly smooths imperfections and leaves your skin looking more even-toned.

It contains a slew of antioxidants, including vitamin E and Lactobionic Acid, to boost your skin’s ability to fight free radicals brought on by daily environmental aggressors – before they can cause premature aging. Exuviance Sheer Daily Protector SPF50 also contains a PHA/Bionic complex, which helps to minimise the breakdown of collagen and maintains your skin’s firmness. It also prevents the formation of fine lines and wrinkles.

As if that’s not enough, a highly purified and concentrated form of Green Tea Extract reduces cell breakdown and helps protect cellular DNA for healthy skin. It’s also fragrance-free, paraben-free, and oil-free, as well as non-acnegenic and non-comedogenic – perfect for more sensitive skin types, then!

Recommended usage: Daily in the mornings. Reapply often, especially after swimming.

Key Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide, Gluconolactone, Lactobionic Acid, Vitamin E, Green Tea Extract.

Party-Perfect Celebrity Makeup Looks To Try This Holiday Season

Party-Perfect Celebrity Makeup Looks To Try This Holiday Season

The holiday season is in full swing and with New Year’s Eve just around the corner, it’s time to start planning the hair and makeup that will bring you into the New Year.

We’ve rounded up some of our favourite celebrity party looks to serve as inspiration… which one will you be wearing to welcome 2018?

Mandy Moore’s bold bubblegum pink pout

Put down you favourite red lippie in favour of something a little different, like Mandy Moore’s vibrant pink lip colour. Keep your eyes simple with just a little bit of liner and some mascara, and don’t forget to define and fill in your brows using a brow wax. Keep the look from falling flat by accentuating your cheekbones with a pink blusher (use a light hand – you don’t want to go OTT!)

Padma Lakshmi’s Ultra Violet Liner

You may have heard that Ultra Violet is Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2018, but trend-setting Padma Lakshmi seems to have predicted this back at the 2017 Emmy Awards in September. You can try this trend, too – ensure that your skin is flawless with just a touch of bronzer for warmth, then line your eyes using a purple eyeliner pencil. Finish off with a nude lip to make sure that all eyes are on… ahem… your eyes!

Kristin Stewart’s subtle smoky eyes paired with plum lips

A deep berry lipstick is a quick and effortless way to add polish to any makeup look, and it’s the perfect way to take your look from boardroom to after-work drinks in a flash. We love how Kristin Stewart rocks a deep plum lipstick with subtle, smoky eyes – try smudging black kohl liner along your lash line, add a dab of highlighter to the inner corner of your eyes, and fishing with a lengthening mascara.

Kendall Jenner’s classic red lip

When in doubt, opt for a luminous complexion and a bright, red lipstick – this look is a tried-and-tested head turner! Apply a radiance-enhancing primer before your foundation to give you a ‘lit-from-within’ look, add a touch of bronzer for warmth, and finish with two coats of lash-defining mascara. Don’t forget to use a lip pencil for a more precise pout.

Which one of these looks are you most likely to try this festive season? Post your makeup looks to instagram and use the hashtag #BeautyWarriorsSA so we can see!
