What: The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Conference

Where: 25 & 26 June 2017

When: The Maslow Hotel, Sandton, Johannesburg

A must event for all spa managers, salon and spa owners, and wellness professionals. The Les Nouvelles Esthetiques Spa Conference focuses on building capacity, raising benchmarks and adding value to the spa industry, in addition to the infinite networking opportunity. The organisers have created a programme that aims at helping you get the best out of your spa business in today’s everchanging society.

The theme for 2017 is #LOVE Your Spa – Revive the Passion

Passion, Freedom and Impact – The 3 Ingredients of Business Success

These elements do not function in isolation. Without a passion for your business, you can’t have the freedom you desire or the strength to make an impact. Without freedom, you’ll never make an impact and your passion is wasted. If you are not making an impact, you’re not experiencing the freedom entrepreneurship allows, nor are you allowing your passion to be fulfilled.

Spa at Four Season Hotel, Westcliff

Life is busy, there is no denying that. We rush from one moment to another, without truly stopping and just breathing. We feel guilty (particularly as women, mothers, wives, partners) for doing something for ourselves that, well, involves doing nothing. But research shows that to be present for others in our lives, to give them the best of us, we need to recharge. And one of the best ways to do this, is by having a spa treatment.

One study, conducted by Jonathan Klick of Florida State University of Law and Thomas Stratmann of George Mason University found that regular spa visits are related to better wellbeing and a lower absenteeism from work. Plus, having a massage helps improve your blood circulation, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to your body; it stimulates the lymphatic system, which helps detox your body; and it releases a hormone called serotonin – your feel-good hormone – that helps to balance you in mind, body and soul. So, you really do owe it to yourself (and those around you) to go for a spa treatment – even just for a few hours.

One such oasis, situated in the busy Joburg suburbs, is the nature-inspired Spa at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff. As you step through the doors, and breath in the atmosphere, you can already feel your stressors and anxiety start to melt away. Here is a true sanctuary, a quietening of the mind and a reawakening of the soul. The outside world slips away, even if it’s just for a few hours. Try one of their signature body treatments, The Gold of Mapungubwe – Life Force of Boabab. Native to the African savannah, this majestic tree is considered the symbol of life and positivity, adaptable to an environment where little thrives. As a succulent, it absorbs water during the rainy season, storing it in its vast trunk, which allows it to produce a nutrient-rich fruit during the dry season.

The Gold of Mapungubwe is inspired by the baobab tree’s golden emollients that are rich in anti-oxidants and healing properties. The experience starts with the Spa’s signature foot ritual. This is followed by an exfoliation, using baobab seed cake mixed with salt and organic baobab oil to polish the skin. The body-balancing and detoxing massage is a relaxing combination of lymphatic drainage movements and acupressure using heated baobab seeds. The treatment leaves you feeling refreshed and recharged, ready for anything.

Our Pick: Protect your manicure and pedicure

Our Pick: Protect your manicure and pedicure

Morgan Taylor React Base and Top Coats

Best thing: Having beautifully manicured nails. Worst thing: Chipped nail polish.
Our hands are our tools. We use them constantly, and this means wear and tear on our nail polish. Of course, it goes without saying that healthy nails will ensure a longer-lasting manicure. However, those who spend a lot of time with their nails in water will end up with dry, brittle nails that may be prone to splitting, while those with oily skin are likely to have oily, shiny nail beds (and peeling nail polish). Professional range Morgan Taylor has the answer: React No-Light Extended Wear Base and Top Coats. Relish Infused Technology bonds with your chosen nail polish for up to 10 days of wear. The Base Coat aims at providing colour adhesion, while the Top Coat provides chip-resistant protection and a high shine that gives the impression of a gel polish (no LED light needed). Most nail polish systems offer best results if you use the base, colour and top coat from the same brand, however, the React range works with any nail polish, irrespective of brand.

Health watch: Could your lack of sleep be causing your pimples?

Health watch: Could your lack of sleep be causing your pimples?

If you are spending hours lying awake at night, your skin may be taking the brunt

The experts will tell you – there is no magic number when it comes to sleep. It really has more to do with quality than quantity. And sleep is truly individual to you. Some people can sleep 10 hours and still wake up feeling grumpy and groggy, while others can bounce out of bed energised after just four or five hours of sleep. However, generally, six to eight hours is the accepted norm for feeling your best.

During your waking hours, your body produces stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) that help you deal with what life throws at you. However, under the cover of darkness, your body starts producing melatonin, responsible for making you drowsy as well as helping to lower your body temperature in preparation for sleep. Melatonin is also able to suppress ultraviolet-induced damage to your skin cells, and reveals strong antioxidant activity, thus could help counteract your environmental and internal stresses. At night, your body also releases the powerful Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which helps in repair and regeneration.

The good news is that your skin cells regenerate faster at night, with the majority of this healing generation taking place between 11pm and 4am. And your skin’s absorbency or permeability is better at night. Plus, collagen (the main protein in your skin’s tissue that gives your skin elasticity, as well as helps protect against the formation of wrinkles and fine lines) also increases at night (again due to HGH).

However, sebum production increases at night (which is why you sometimes wake up with greasy skin). And a lack of sleep promotes stress-response in your body, including an increase of cortisol. Research conducted by Dr Gil Yosipovich, professor of dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, has found that stress-related inflammation can therefore be to blame for those horrid breakouts. “Our research suggest that acne severity associated with stress may result from factors other than sebum quantity. It’s possible that inflammation may be involved.”

So, take a deep breath, relax and get some sleep.
